Smart Serve

What it is

Smart Serve is training on the responsible sale and service of alcohol. It is one of the training programs approved by the AGCO, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

Who needs it

In Ontario, anyone involved in the sale, service, sampling, or delivery of liquor must hold valid certification from an approved program. That includes taking orders for alcohol. It also covers security staff (AGCO). So if you will be a server, bartender, or anyone else who handles alcohol orders, plan to get certified before you start.

How old you must be

You must be at least 18 to serve alcohol in Ontario, even though the legal drinking age is 19 (Smart Serve). Staff who sell alcohol in grocery and convenience stores must also be 18 or older (AGCO).

Full Program or Retail Program?

Smart Serve offers two online programs:

  • Full Program ($44.95). Covers every kind of place that sells, serves, delivers, or offers samples of alcohol, including restaurants and bars. It takes about 4 to 5 hours.
  • Retail Program ($24.95). Only for convenience, grocery, wine, and other retail stores. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

A retail-only certificate does not let you sell or serve alcohol outside a retail store, such as in a restaurant or bar (AGCO). If you are not sure where you will work, the Full Program gives you more choices.

The online test

  • The training is self-paced and online.
  • The final test is proctored online. You need a webcam and a valid government-issued photo ID.
  • You need 80% to pass.
  • The Full Program is offered in English, French, Korean, Chinese, Punjabi, and Spanish.

How long it lasts

In Ontario, liquor training certificates must be renewed every five years (AGCO). If you recertify before your certificate expires, Smart Serve offers a lower price of $29.95 (Smart Serve recertification).

Food handler certification

What it is

Food handler training teaches you how to handle, store, and prepare food safely, so customers don't get sick.

Who needs it

Ontario requires food premises to have at least one certified food handler on site during every hour they operate. The law does not require every worker to be certified. Still, employers often ask for it, because they need a certified person on every shift. Having it on your resume can help.

Where to get it

You can get certified through:

  • Your local public health unit, if it offers a course
  • A private provider recognized by the province. Ontario keeps a list of recognized providers. The province says all public health units in Ontario accept certificates from these providers.

If you live in Toronto, note that the City of Toronto's own Food Handler Certification Program is closed. Courses and exams are on hold indefinitely. Toronto Public Health accepts certificates from any Ontario health unit, and it points people to the province's list of approved providers.

Before you pay, check that the provider is on the ontario.ca list. A course that is not on the list, such as one made for another province or country, may not count.

Cost

The province does not set one price. Each provider sets its own, and some offer online courses and exams. Compare a few recognized providers before you choose.

How long it lasts

A food handler certificate is valid for five years (City of Toronto).

Who pays for the training?

Ontario's employment standards say that time spent in training required by your employer or by law counts as work time (Ontario: Hours of work).

  • If you already work somewhere and your employer requires you to take a course, ask how that time will be paid.
  • If a certificate is a condition of getting hired, ask the employer about it before you pay.

If you are not sure about your situation, call the Employment Standards Information Centre at 1-800-531-5551 (ontario.ca).

Tips

  • Take the Smart Serve test on a computer with a working webcam, in a quiet room, with your photo ID ready.
  • Save each certificate as a PDF, and put the expiration dates in your phone's calendar.
  • List both certificates on your resume with the dates you got them.
